Some Thoughts from the Road

I just returned from a "short" jaunt from St. Louis, MO for the holidays with my family.  Here are some thoughts from my cross country journey.

I have a wonderful wife and wonderful kids.  The two boys did an outstanding job sitting in a car 18 hours (we'll get to the length issue) all things considered.  And my wife was a great driving companion.  Of course, I knew about her, but the kids were a wild card.  They were kids, and had their moments, but for a 1 year old and a two year old, they did great.  Plus, they can't ask "Are we there yet" yet.  I'll enjoy it now.

Ever wonder what happened to all the old abanded homes along the highway?  I look at those and wonder what their story was.  It is amazing to think that at each of those there was once a family, who laughed and cried together.  There were likely kids who played outside and pets who ran about.  Many were on once thriving and active farms.  I'd love to know the story of each one.  It's a fascinating look at America, when you think about it.

Drives took much less time before we had kids.  What once took us about 14 hours now takes upwards of 18.  They did great, but changing diapers, letting them run, waiting for them to eat, whatever, takes up much more time.  Driving ain't what it used to be.

America is truly a beautiful country.  OK, so I just went though plains and some (small) mountains, but each area is so beautiful in its own way.

Accidents blocking highways suck, but the technology to contact folks via cell phone to find out what may be wrong is amazing.

Billboards can actually be entertaining.

Its amazing what kids music actually does to appease little ears.

Its a friendly reminder how lucky I am.
