The Sad State of Affairs

Ho Hum.   That's my opinion of the state of affairs in the country.  Looking around at verything, it can be hard to get too excited by much.  The liberal left is moving forward, and it seems little can be done to stop it.  Why fight?

Of course, I do not believe we should give up.  As long as we have Truth on our side, all is well.  The trouble is going to be keep the Truth in the minds of most people.  As long as the Truth is to be recognized, there is hope.

I have capitalized Truth for a reason, I do refer to God.  However, I do not call Truth God, also for a reason.  The reason is that when I speak here, I speak of the use of the rational mind God gave us.  This is the biggest tool we have at our disposal.  When I say we, I mean all human kind.

See, there is a growing trend, and it has been growing for sometime, really back to the 19th century when the roots of post-modern thought were born.  But basically, through recent decades there has been an all out attack on Truth: both God and rational thought.  The focus on God has been made a million times, and I'd rather focus on how we are taught to think.

First, truth has been reduced to opinion.  It is becoming increasingly difficult to pinpoint what truth is.  So many people say that truth is what you make of it; they say truth is subjective.  They are wrong.  Truth us truth is truth.  This is accomplished by what used to be called logic.

Second, feelings trump evidence.  Facts no longer bare much importance.  What really matters is how you feel about something.  What you want it to be plays a larger role in defining what something is than what it really is.  Further, negative thoughts are considered bad.  A child must not have negative thoughts or else he will grow to be a dimented person, so goes the thinking today.

Third, social justice trumps practicallity every time.  Of course, social justice is such a vague premise to begin with, but that does not matter.  Social justice means everything to some, but only when it applies to their cause du jour.  Women in the middle east, who essentiallylive as slaves get no respect from the self serving feminists of our country.  These feminists are more concerned with putting on another version of the V***na Monologues than helping truly oppressed women.

Fourth, soundbites have replaced well argued positions and platforms.  Watch presidential debates these days.  You'll see what I mean.  Watch the commercials and the news shows.

Fifth, entertainment glorifies everything that was once considered wrong.  Sex, drugs, stealing, manipulating, cheating, you name it, it is glorified on TV or in the movies.  Studies continue to pour evidence that shows how devestating this to our culture, but the culture does not listen.  Remember, its about feeling good.

Behind all of this is a fundamental shift away from rational thought.  For if people thought things through, they would see how slippery a slope relying on emotion as a primary means for judging life really is.

Truth

 Truth.

What is it?

Who has it?

Who knows it?

Tough questions to many people out there.  Easy for many others.  I would argue that those on the right know truth, what it is, and how to get it.

Why, then, do I argue that the right has a better grasp of the truth than the left?  I say so first and foremost because the right acknowledges that there is a truth to be known and obtained.

This has profound impact on how an individual lives his life.  Think about it.  If one denies there is any truth, what point is there from keeping that person from making it up.  In fact, that's exactly what most people do-- they find a philosophy they like and try to live by it.  This is often some sort of Eastern religious tradition or a hybrid of.  It can also be nothing but what society dictates they live by, in other words, they let society make the rules.  Some may even deny completely any rhyme or reason to the world.

What all these beliefs say , in the end, is that each individual is free to choose whatever belief they want.  And, to be fair, we are given the freedom to choose.  But to choose not to believe in an ultimate truth ends in emptiness.  Life without an ultimate truth has nothing to support it.  Even if one can find a meaning that feels terribly real and real, it will fall.  It lacks true substance.  All such beliefs are a house a cards.

I wish not to get into the theology in this piece, but I do want to offer what the alternative is.  Christ died for us so that we can know what is true and be closer to it than ever before.  He offers the way to that Truth.  In fact, Christ is that Truth.  All one needs to know truth is to acknowledge that and ask him to forgive you.

See, in short, it is our sin that gets in the way of God, the Truth.  Christ is the bridge to the Truth.  We were never meant to be separated from it, but as I said earlier, we are given the freedom to choose.  Being but humans, we are not able to reach the Truth on our own.

Looking at the world around me, it seems that Truth's foe is trying, and in many ways succeeding, in denying access to it.  They speak in nice sounding rhetoric.  They make valid points, on the surface.  They belittle anyone who disagrees with them.  They seek to push the Truth's voice from society by intimidation and law.

Their nice sounding rhetoric, does indeed, sound good, and is truth, on the surface.  All people's should be treated the same.  All points of view should be honored.  All children should be given a chance.  However, what they want to do goes far beyond those words and they actually fall on their face when one recognizes that truth.

They do not want all people to be treated the same.  They do not want to honor all points of view.  They do not believe in raising children to be all they can be.  They do want certain groups to get special perks.  They do want to honor only their points of view.  They want children to be what the adults want the children to be.

Their mode of achieving this is to call names, flood the papers and news services with their golas, and use the government to enforce their agendas.  That some, a majority actually, disagree is of no issue.  They move ahead because they think they know what is right.  They think they have the truth, but they don't.  This is why they must use such tactics and develop a next generation in the way they think they should be, and not really what the children need or want.

These people are selfish and self serving.  They speak in the name of the greater good, but there is no way allowing homosexual marriage benefits soceity at large.  There is no way allowing people to do certain things in the home is beneficial to society at large.  They think this is truth, to be able to allow all to do whatever they want since each person decides his or her own.

This is why they must stifle all debate.  Kevin McCoullough wrote an article about this, but I am offering an extension.  They stifle debate because they cannot win it otherwise.  They know they are wrong and offer a solution only applicable if they destroy what Truth really is.

What they do not know is that they cannot destroy God.  Soon enough, either in this world or the next, they will find this out.

The Culture Wars Pt. 3

So, I have established that our culture is heading down a scary path, why is it that some fail to see the results of such behavior?  The question is very tough to answer and may be to big to really do it justice.  However, I would like to offer a simple respnse: selfishness.

I think that selfishness, the idea that the individual is the most important person in the world has profound impact on our culture, perhaps a pretty obvious statement.  But let me dissect this in terms of how it affects our culture wars.

Selfishness gets in the way of common sense.  Selfishness dictates that I don't care what others think.  Selfishness means that I must be allowed to my needs first before anyone or anything else.

In terms of some of the issues out there today, like sex and drug use, people can argue that it makes them feel good and does no damage to other people.  OK.  But what does it add to other people?  What benefit does smoking pot give to society?  What benefit does allowing men (or women) to have sex with kids add to society?  I am not sure these questions have been asked, but the answers are none, except that the person who wants to do such behavior gets his kisks.  These are easy examples, but capture the point.  Some others (but not all) are abortion, attacking religion, and the current reaction to war.

This is where selfishness is in play, and how it plays a part in our culture wars.  Because some people are unwilling to deny something because it is wrong and because it is appealling to them.  This behavior then, becomes normal or appealling to others, leaving more and more people in this selfish mode.

Today, the idea of the self as pre-eminiment power is taught from the beginning.  This plays into the spiral, and unless more people realize its ultimate consequences, will lead to the division or destruction of our nation.  As posted earlier, without people who can talk to each other and without a way to bridge the divide, our nation will in some way self destruct.

I firmly believe that society needs to waken up to its selfish undertones.  "For the good of all" means "For the good of me" today (allowing homosexual marriage is only good for the tiny segment or our nation who wants it and drastically alters so many things, allowing men to have sex with children only helps these men).  So, selfishness is an important driver of our culture wars.

Culture Wars, Part 2

I wrote yesterday about how our own culture failures will eventually tear our society apart.  Today, I wish to go into why it will fall apart, and the answer is not because of disagreement.

If the answer is not in disagreement, than what is the reason?  The reason is the lack of a single standard by which to hold people accountable.  In times past, there was a belief in a higher power, whatever that was.  This higher power ultimately set rules for the right way to lead a life.  It provided boundaries, borders if you will, between what is OK and what is not.  As I discuss, pardon an over-simplification of past realities.  I do so to set up a distinction between then and now.

For example, whether or not one used foul language, it was deemed inappropriate.  Or perhaps it was understood that children were simply supposed to respect and obey adults.  Adults also knew children wer children, and not necessarilly their friends.  Or, sexual activity outside of marriage was considered wrong no matter who did what.  Debtors were "outed" publically.

These are but a few examples.  Some practices may have been patriarchical or "wrong" in some fashion, but they were the standards that most people lived by.  It kept people within bounds and if somone stepped outside those bounds, they would face consequences of some sort.  The consequences could range of shame to punshment by law, depending on the offense.  The key element there in the consequences is the shame.  Peer pressure is powerful, and respect is powerful.

People would look to be seen as respectable, and keep their families respectable.  This force kept people and society within a tighly bound network.  All pushed forward within the same boundaries.  The result was that everyone could talk with each other from the same vantage point, or at least undersant each vantage point.

Now, look at today.  There is no one set of boundaries or code of living that people follow.  Children are viewed differently by adults, many thinking the best way to influence them is to befriend them.  Sex is viewed differently as the topic is becoming dangerously close to "anything goes".  Language means very little these days and peole seem overly sensitive to remarks that seem "hateful".  Publically condemning someone is as bad as the wrong the person committed.  Respect does not matter as long as you respect yourself.  A higher power does not exist, and if so, it is the law.

This change is profound.  It opens up the boundary to most anything and allows that boundary to shift wherever the prevailing winds blow.  The result is that everyone can really pretty much do anything they want without too much fear of consequences.

Now, some may say that this is a good thing, to liberate people and to give them the support to be who they truly are.  OK.  I almost accept that as it is.  However, there is more.  Another result of this shift from boundaries to moving boundaries is the question of which to use in a discussion.

This is the reason our society will fall apart.  It will not be able to work out its differences, which are growing ever faster.  It will not be able to work them out because the standard, the boundary that kept people together will no longer be there.  In lieue of the former boundary, a vacuum is forming, and we all kow how nature abhores a vacuum.  The freedoms we enjoy will be swallowed up by this divide, and one of two things will happen.  One will be a final split between the new cultures, or a new power will come in that will crush all existing freedoms in a manner similar to Hitler or 1984.

As it is now, few people recognize or admit that such a divide exists, but when people deny a right and wrong, they themselves create such a split.  This is exactly what I see at work today.  Hopefully, more people will acknowledge what is amiss.

The Culture Wars

Ahh, as we face an enemy abroad so conservative that makes the Family Research Council look like NOW, we are giving them every reason to hate us internally.  Our culture has stopped producing good things and images.  The Islamic fundamentalists do not even let women show their faces in public, but we let women show pretty much anything they want.  The Arabs do not like cartoons that even represent their god, but we allow folks to excrement on Ours and call it art.

What is the point?  The point is that our culture is destroying itself, aiding those who hate it to hate it more, and falling from within.  Virtually every aspect of our nation is pushing that envelope further and further.  Eventually, it will fall, leaving us wondering what happened.

While it would take a book to go into every aspect of society, it is suffice to say that everything from our music and art to our relationships, from our schools and churches to our media outlets is facing a struggle to maintain the status quo.  When we celebrate art desecrating the primary God of worship by peeing on it, when we have songs such as Nickleback's "Figured You Out" proudly played on the radio, when we openly push to allow homosexuals to be married, or when we post pictures of people glorifying sex everywhere, we forget what is being sent abroad.  The conservative element in the Arab worlds tends to be the one that goes after us the most.  When looking at what we produce, it is no wonder they call us the "Great Satan".

However, I do not mean this to be a piece on Arab fundamentals, I mean it to encourage Americans to look at America from their vantage point and ask themselves if it is really OK to allow such filth to be spewed everywhere.  Further, it is an appropriate question to ask when will all this stop?

I have posed this to liberals, as have others, to really a not plausible response-- it will not lead anywhere.  A few have answered honestly, and they have said it will lead to pedophilia likely, next, or polygamy, or beyond.  And then when we get there, where then?

I think that the greater portion of our nation does not believe in the liberal agenda.  I think most Americans are very tolerant and do not want to be seen as prudes, however this group needs to wake up to the reality of where we are going.

If the terrorists don't get to us, we will, and the terrorists will have won.

Terror-- What if we got hit again?

Yay Scotland Yard!

Thank you for setting off another maelstrom of activity here in the states.  The debate about terror is renewed, and with a new vigor.  We in the west need to remember what we are up against, though I fear ultimately it will take another big attack to truly wake the giant again.  But I guess from some of our friends' actions (Ms. Sheehan, et al) it will be Mr. Bush's fault, or your own Mr. Blair's fault.  Somehow, the two will have not connected the dots...

Who Is In COntrol

Tough question,a nd one that could take up a book.  Is it each individual?  Is it your boss?  Yours pouse?  Your God?  The government?  No one?

It seems there was a time when everyone knew the answer to that, and the answer was someone bigger and better than themselves.  Whether that was God or Government or family, everyone knew their role and the rules associated with that.

Now, that concept can have some drawbacks, as unfortunately some took advantage, but in the larger scheme of things it kept folks in line.  Why?  They knew what was appropriate and what wasn't.  Boundaries kept things in focus and fostered growth in the right direction.

Today, boundaries are non-existant.  And anything designed to create a boundary is deemed "intolerant" or bigoted.  How wrong is this idea, and how dangerous.  The result is that people can do whatever they want.  The problem behind that though is that I believe deep in each of us is a desire to do right.  God created each and everyone one of us, and He is good.  So we all have some good, but we don't know how to bring that out, so we keep bouncing from thing to thing trying to find it.

Most never do, and increasingly the trend is to get further away from the truth.  The good news is that no one can ever get so far as to be completely lost.  God never takes the goodness away.

Hello World

My first  blog!  How exciting!  Or something...

Now, in these posts, I will capture my thoughts on the passing world around us.  It is in many ways scary, but there are some wonderful things and thoughts out there that are encouraging.  I think it is important to educate folks on the positives, and to point out why the negatives are wrong.  Just simply stating something is wrong is insufficient.

So, to all who may read this and others, please dialogue.  Let me know if I am in error or if I am missing something.  Education is key to growth.  I think all can appreciate that.
